Gold Medal Winner
‘Bed & Breakfast of the Year’

We didn’t think 3 years ago our lives could be changed so much. When we first saw Spears Cross we knew it had something special and we could put our hearts into transforming it into a stylish and desirable place to stay. We haven’t stopped, it’s been full throttle and we still have more to do.

Being new to the tourism industry we see competitions as a means of achieving new goals and checking that we are doing things right. This is why we entered the South West Tourism’s Excellence Awards. The South West is the UK’s largest holiday destination and the competition attracts over 250 entries. We became a finalist in 2006 and entered again last year. We never in our wildest dreams thought we would be visited and judged by tourism experts and awarded the ‘Bed & Breakfast of the Year’. We are truly amazed and delighted. The award is prestigious and underpins the importance of the official Visit Britain grading scheme. It is an achievement that we are thrilled about.

To top off our awards for 2009 we have also been awarded a Gold Medal from Taste of the West. This award is in recognition of using local produce. The Gold Medal has been awarded to just 2 establishments in Somerset. It is the second consecutive year we have achieved such an accolade.

We firmly believe we cannot become complacent; we have to try harder. We already have new breakfast ideas in hand and we are working at further improving guest facilities. We believe there is a strong market for good quality, affordable accommodation and we intend to justify our awards.

Christmas Wreath Course
wreath.jpgWe are offering a course where you make your own Christmas Wreath to take home with you. The date is the 27th and 28th November and is open to 8 people. Susie Logan will host the course on the Saturday and will show you how to design and construct your wreath. All floral items, as well as lunch are included.

Flower Arranging Course
flowerarrangement.jpgFloral Designer Susie Logan specialises in flowers for weddings and travels over the West Country decorating Churches and Reception Halls. She has appeared in local magazines and is quite a celebratory! We are therefore delighted she has agreed to hold a flower arranging course here in Dunster just for Spears Cross Guests..  Learn more about the Horse and Crook Garden Accessories Dunster

Digital Camera Course
digital.jpgA new idea, but forced upon us by our own inability to use our camera! We have asked Aron Cody-Boucher from Somerset Creative to organise a 2 to 1 educational class on how to use your digital camera. The course, at your own pace will cover the controls, formatting and structure of taking photographs. You will have the opportunity to take both indoor photographs and outdoor scenes; then discussing the composure with Aron. The course costs £95 per person and includes access to a Canon 5000 large format photo printer. All you have to do is say you want to attend a course when you call or e-mail us. We will check the date with Aron and confirm with you by return.  See some of Arons work at Somerset Creative Photography

Christmas and New Year 2009
tree.jpgWe are open over the festive period. Dunster and Exmoor are especially rewarding at this time of year; perfect for walking or cycling. A log fire on your return is perfect and at Spears Cross we have just the thing to relax by! Plus, you can enjoy a glass or two of wine from our wine list.

Sausages!

sausages.jpgThis is really exciting! We have linked with Simon and Nicky Gibbard of Smallcombe Farm to produce Rare Breed, Free Range pigs just for us! So, we have LOTS of really, meaty and delicious tasting sausages! The next stage of our project of sourcing local food is to produce the Bacon. This will be made the old fashioned way in a process that takes over 2 weeks….but the result will be fantastic! Bacon as it used to be made and taste; none of your supermarket stuff here… The best bit is the food miles are really low, if you want to visit the pigs then let us know.

Dunster by Candlelight
dbc.jpgSpears Cross is now full until 2014 for the popular annual Dunster event- Dunster by Candlelight.   We do recommend booking any accommodation or dining for the candlelight weekend far in advance.
